LOSS A LOVE AND GAIN THREE CHAPTER 1

“No! This can’t be happening. JAMES! Come back. I… I… I love you too much.”

It was raining heavily. Thunder roared, and lightning flashed every few seconds. It was dreary and dark. Quiet footsteps echoed in the downpour, lost in the unfamiliar forest. Alone, Anna walked, crying for her love.

“JAMES! Come back.”

He had dumped her. He had been using her from the very beginning. She was just a toy, a way for him to pass the time as an immortal. The rest of the Moonwalker pack followed his orders as if he were their leader — without so much as a goodbye. It was as if she didn’t even deserve that much.

James had told her she was his mate, that they would be together forever, and she had believed him. She loved him. Now, she regretted it. Anna guessed his “forever” was short. She cried, her heart aching and beating wildly.

Beth, her best friend, hadn’t even said goodbye. She hadn’t considered Anna’s feelings at all. Beth had gone along with James, and maybe their friendship hadn’t meant anything after all. It was cruel, what they did to her. Didn’t they know that leaving her would tear her apart? Didn’t they see that she considered the Moonwalker pack her family — Heather, her mother; Michael and Davis, her brothers? Jesse was the only honest one, the only one who had shown her true feelings toward her.

Anna stopped and looked up at the sky, screaming, “JAMES, YOU BASTARD!” She slowly lowered her head and whispered, “I can’t believe you did this to me.”

They had brought her into their world, making her fight for her life against a crazed werewolf who had wanted to claim her as his. They had saved her in the end, but now she was confused. Why save her if she was just a toy? Why go through all that trouble, only to leave her in the end? They had told her she was part of their family, their pack, and that made it so much worse.

Lost and heartbroken, Anna’s tears fell with the rain as she began walking again. Her shoulders slumped, her heart ached from the pain of her mate leaving her just hours ago with his family. Now, lost in the same forest where he had left her, she tried to find a familiar path in the heavy rain.

Anna stumbled and fell into a puddle, lying there, not bothering to get up. It didn’t matter anymore. The people who had claimed to love her were gone. Her mate was gone. Her best friend and family were gone. Anna curled up on the wet forest floor, wishing death would claim her. She closed her eyes, deciding to give up. If her soulmate didn’t want her, what hope did she have for anyone else to love her? It was better to give up now, to save herself from future pain.

Catherine — her mother, if you could call her that — had treated Anna like a live-in maid, forcing her to care for an abusive, selfish woman who had never wanted her. After Catherine had remarried, she had gotten rid of Anna, but Anna didn’t mind. Her nightmare with Catherine was over.

Jeff, her dad, might miss her, though she wasn’t sure. He had barely interacted with her, and moving on wouldn’t be hard for him. They hadn’t been close in the first place. She knew he had taken her out of duty, not love. She was starting to hate that word — love. It was meaningless to her now. She had overheard Jeff telling his best friend, Samuel, that he couldn’t wait to get rid of her once she turned eighteen. She had heard him say it, and it had hurt like hell.

Well, Jeff didn’t have to wait anymore. Her eighteenth birthday had come and gone, and he hadn’t even acknowledged her that day. He was probably counting down the days until she graduated high school. If her parents and her soulmate didn’t love her, why should she bother with anything?

The rain fell heavily on her prone form as the darkness grew thicker. A creature was hunting her, waiting for the right moment to catch its prey.

An eight-foot bipedal were-creature stood behind the trees for cover. Its red eyes with black slits watched the injured human intently. The creature’s black fur, what little was left, stood in anticipation, ready to pounce. Its clawed hands were curled, and its razor-sharp teeth dripped with saliva. The teeth jutted from its disfigured face as it savored the scent of the human. The scent was alluring — so sweet. Unable to wait any longer, the creature lunged at the human, biting into her side. Juicy flesh oozed sweet blood as Anna screamed in pain.

Three figures appeared quickly. Yelena grabbed the creature by the neck, forcing it to release Anna. In her rage, Yelena ripped the creature apart, starting with its head. Caught off guard, it had no chance to defend itself and died swiftly. Daria and Nina crouched protectively in front of Anna while Yelena fought. Once the danger had passed, Nina and Daria turned to check on their mate.

Anna was bleeding badly from her right side. The women gathered around her, trying to calm her as she cried. Nina took off her jacket and pressed it against Anna’s wound, trying to stop the bleeding.

“We need to take her to the hospital,” Daria said.

“No,” Nina replied, her voice strained. “She’ll die before they can help her. We need to go home and handle this ourselves.”

“Okay, but what is that?” Daria asked, pointing at the dismembered creature.

“We’ll figure it out later,” Yelena said, gathering Anna in her arms. Each of her mates touched Yelena’s shoulder before they teleported home.
